SK Planet’s Weather Information Service to Cover the Entire Seoul Metropolitan Area

2014.06.30
-  Offers real-time information on extreme weather events such as localized heavy rain, heat wave,
and typhoon by utilizing mobile phone base stations to collect weather data

-  Following the installation of Automatic Weather Stations in Seoul City last year, recently expanded
AWS network to include Incheon and Kyunggi area, with plans to have around 1,100 AWS with
an interval of 1~3km in the entire Seoul metropolitan area

-  Entered into a partnership agreement with K-water for cooperation on flood disaster prevention
  and preparedness
Its application expected to cover a wide range of industries including transportation,
logistics, energy, construction, leisure, and retail

SK Planet announced today that it will expand the coverage of its real-time weather information service
‘Weather Planet (
www.weatherplanet.co.kr)’ to the entire Seoul metropolitan area.

Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) are installed in mobile phone base stations to collect data on
temperature, humidity, rainfall, atmospheric pressure, wind velocity and direction. The weather
information collected through Internet of Things (IoT) technology is then transmitted real time to
receivers.

Following the installation of AWS at 264 base stations in Seoul City June last year, SK Planet
recently expanded AWS network to include 131 base stations in the Incheon area. The plan is
to further add 694 base stations in Kyunggi-do and have 1,089 AWS spaced 1~3km apart from
each other in the entire Seoul metropolitan area by the end of July.

As Weather Planet leverages densely installed base stations to collect weather data, it offers
economic and reliable solutions to government agencies, local governments, and private
enterprises that need more precise and accurate weather observation. In addition,
Weather
Planet can be utilized to enhance the accuracy of weather observation for disaster prevention,
thereby increasing the responsiveness to meteorological disasters that include landslide,
flooding, and urban flood inundation caused by extreme weather such as severe rainstorm,
change in rainfall during monsoon season, heat wave, and typhoon. By providing such
valuable weather information, Weather Planet is expected to contribute to protecting lives
and property.

In addition, SK Planet is expanding its partnership with public and private organizations.
Last year, SK Planet signed an MOU with National Disaster Management Institute (NDMI)
on the provision of Weather Planet’s weather data to Smart Big Board, NDMI’s disaster
control center. In May, SK Planet also entered into a partnership agreement with K-water
(
www.kwater.or.kr) for cooperation on flood disaster prevention and preparedness.
The two partners will also pursue initiatives aimed at preventing river flooding and
minimizing flood damage.

“As SK Planet expanded the coverage of its real-time weather information service to the
entire metropolitan area,
Weather Planet is expected to be in high demand from those
planning to establish a meteorological network and also from those who want to enhance
the accuracy and stability of their existing system,” said Choi Gil-seong, SK Planet’s Vice
President of Enterprise Business Division. “Going forward, under partnership with
government agencies and local governments, we expect to establish a nationwide weather
observation network and contribute to public protection and disaster management.”

SK Planet says that usage of weather data produced by Weather Planet is not only confined
to disaster preparedness and response. It is currently being applied in real-time traffic information
offered by SK Planet’s mobile navigation service T Map and is expected to be utilized to increase
responsiveness to communication network error and predict wildfire behavior and migration path
of air contaminant.

Weather Planet’s application is expected to cover a wide range of industries including transportation
, logistics, energy, construction, leisure, retail, and mobile, not to speak of airports and seaports
where
accurate and reliable data is a must to ensure safety and operational efficiency. As
temperature fluctuation data can be used to improve distribution efficiency of electrical network,
Weather Planet is expected to contribute to enhancing cost efficiency and productivity in many industries.

Moreover, Weather Planet offers a wide range of weather information in the form of open API,
giving developers convenient access to information such as local weather forecast for every
neighborhood, hourly local weather forecast, lightning strike observation updated every ten minutes,
and the Korean Peninsula weather radar and satellite animation. Visit Weather Planet website
