Seoul, Korea, February 21, 2013—SK Planet announced today that it will offer the world’s first smartphone multimedia
services equipped with Dolby (Digital) 5.1ch Surround Sound in partnership with Dolby Laboratories, a globally recognized
innovator of surround sound technologies.
Under the partnership, SK Planet will begin providing VOD services applied with the latest Dolby technology called ‘Dolby
Digital Plus’ from as early as March through its applications store, T Store. Dolby Digital Plus is Dolby's core technology that
enables users to enjoy rich virtual surround sound on headphones, and provides multichannel sounds such as Dolby 5.1 Ch
Surround on mobile devices.
SK Planet will update the VOD player of T Store 3.0 by applying the technology. Then, customers will be able to experience
the best Dolby Surround sounds just by updating the T Store application on their smartphones. Such updates will be first
available for Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE serviced by SK Telecom, and will be offered to most Android devices within March 2013.
Customers can simply download on-demand movies marked with "Dolby" from T Store and enjoy the best sound
quality—supported by Dolby (Digital) 5.1 Ch Surround Sound—anywhere and anytime, feeling as if they are watching movies
in their living room equipped with home theater system.
Moreover, the company will apply Dolby Sound Field Effect to its on-demand TV contents to improve the quality of low-pitched
and high-pitched sounds, which will make sounds more clear and powerful, and help maintain a consistent sound level,
thus creating an optimal multimedia content viewing environment for users.
Going forward, the company plans to employ the technology to other multimedia services like hoppin and MelOn to enable
customers to enjoy premium-quality video and music via diverse mobile devices and smart TV.
"Through this partnership, SK Planet will provide customers with high quality VOD services supported by differentiated Dolby
sound technologies," said Jung Ki-hyun, Chief Product Officer of SK Planet. "We will continue to work closely with Dolby
to offer the most attractive services that can satisfy customers around the world, thereby becoming a global digital contents
platform provider.”
Meanwhile, SK Planet is scheduled to display T Store's VOD service applied with the Dolby Digital Plus technology at GSMA
Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona, Spain from February 25. The company plans to strengthen its mobile multimedia
content business by expanding its premium content service equipped with high-quality surround sound technologies under
cooperation with Dolby.
