SK Planet Launches Korea’s First Real-time Weather Information Service

2013.06.17
-  Launched Weather Pong, Korea’s first free weather update service app using MNO base stations infrastructure
-  Updates every minute for areas within 1~2km radius in Seoul for more precise information
-  Plans to expand coverage to six metropolitan cities by year-end and to entire country by 2014

Seoul, Korea, June 17, 2013—SK Planet announced today the launch of Weather Pong, Korea’s first weather information
service using mobile network infrastructure

Weather Pong is based on a real-time weather information platform developed by Planet X, SK Planet’s in-house venture
program. SK Telecom’s network infrastructure and data gathered by weather sensors are combined to deliver faster and
more precise weather information.

Sensors are installed in 263 SK Telecom base stations in Seoul to collect data on temperature, humidity, rainfall,
atmospheric pressure, wind velocity and direction. Weather Pong combines this sensor data with the public weather information
provided by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). Users, as a result, can get an accurate real-time update on the rapid
weather developments, such as change in rainfall during monsoon season and severe rainstorms and typhoons.

SK Planet’s platform presents minute-by-minute updates on smaller blocks of areas each with a radius of 1~2km. The
conventional weather information was updated every hour for larger areas with a radius of 15~30km.

Currently, SK Planet’s weather sensors are installed only in Seoul, but the plan is to gradually expand the sensor network
across Korea. It will cover six metropolitan cities by the year-end. By next year, there will be over 4000 sensors across the country.

In addition to current weather updates and hourly and weekly forecasts, Weather Pong provides cloud images and the
course of progressing typhoons on maps. There is also an adorable animated character that has some twenty expressions
and gestures that match the weather. Users can also post the image of the animated figure on Facebook, Twitter and other
SNS to share weather information with friends in a fun way. Weather Pong can be downloaded at T Store and Google Play
free of charge. It will soon be available on Apple App Store.

SK Planet plans to further innovate its real-time weather information platform in partnership with public and private organizations
. In April, SK Planet signed an MOU with National Disaster Management Institute (NDMI) under the Ministry of Security and Public
Administration to collaborate on the provision of high-resolution weather information. This initiative is intended to support NDMI
to develop more effective policies on disasters and safety management. Details about SK Planet’s weather-related initiatives
are available on www.weatherplanet.co.kr.

“Weather Pong allows us to provide users with the most optimized weather information,” said Kah Jong-hyun, Senior Vice
President and Head of Core Platform Management of SK Planet. “We will apply our high-resolution weather platform in various
areas to develop a new platform industry.”
