SK Planet Partners with CJ HelloVision on Cloud TV Business

2013.11.08

-  SK Planet signed deals with CJ HelloVision to apply its very own cloud streaming solution to digital cable TV
-  Data to be transmitted directly from cloud server to cable TV.
TV apps, web browsing, videos, N-screen and other smart services accessible without having
to replace the old set-top box
-  To pilot early next year the first digital cable TV service in Korea to be based on cloud streaming
and later to be launched on a commercial scale

Seoul, Korea, November 8, 2013SK Planet (CEO: Jinwoo So, www.skplanet.com) announced a partnership
deal with CJ HelloVision (CEO: Kim Jin-seok, www.cjhellovision.com) to enable cloud streaming services for
digital cable TV subscribers of CJ HelloVision.

Cloud streaming is a proprietary solution developed by SK Planet. This virtualization technology allows
some of the key features of the TV set-top box to be performed instead by the cloud server. For example,
this unique service platform enables the transmission of data directly from the cloud server to the TV.

This platform is agnostic to the model, the operating system and the capabilities of the set-top box.
As the computations and video transmissions take place inside the cloud server, this platform reduces
the cost of periodically replacing the old box with a new one. Once a set-top box has been installed,
the high-spec apps such as TV gallery and 3D fairytale contents as well as web browsing, N-screen
and other smart services can be delivered consistently with much less investment in the box.

The TV viewer can enjoy the added benefit of wider selection of multimedia contents compared to
what the existing set-top box had offered. It is also possible to use the remote control app on
the smartphone to configure the TV setting, the menu format and widgets on the screen to create
a personalized UI and UX. Diverse media contents such as YouTube, tving as well as real-time
broadcast may be enjoyed.

Digital cable TV based on cloud streaming will be serviced to CJ HelloVision subscribers
on a pilot scale early next year for the first time in Korea. The partners have agreed to launch this
on a commercial scale after the initial period of stabilizing the service operation.

Lee Young-guk, Director of Marketing at CJ HelloVision announced, “By introducing the cloud streaming solution,
we will be able to deliver quality TV and N-screen services to make the TV smarter for our subscribers.
We are stepping up to become the next new leader in a broadcast-telecommunication convergence
market to stay ahead of the shifting demands of the market and our customers.”

Lee Sung-ho, Head of CPO Strategies at SK Planet expressed his confidence in the cloud streaming solution.
“Cloud streaming solution will create a platform for a media environment that can be accessed quickly, easily and reliably anytime, anywhere with minimum investment. We will partner with other TV service providers to deliver more innovative services.”
