rain spell, severe rainstorm, and typhoon.

Seoul, Korea, September 1, 2014—SK Planet’s Weather Planet (www.weatherplanet.co.kr) today
unveiled its integrated weather monitoring system. Weather Planet (www.weatherplanet.co.kr) is a
real-time weather information service that utilizes mobile phone base stations to collect weather data.

Weather Planet uses Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) installed in mobile phone base stations to
collect data on temperature, humidity, rainfall, atmospheric pressure, wind velocity and direction.
The weather information collected through Internet of Things (IoT) technology is then transmitted
real time to receivers.

Last month, SK Planet completed the installation of 1,089 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in
the entire Seoul Metropolitan area that covers Seoul, Incheon and Kyunggi area. SK Planet has
completed building a
nationwide integrated weather monitoring system by combining weather
information delivered by densely spaced AWS (1~3km apart from each other) in the entire Seoul
metropolitan area with weather information provided from 640 nationwide stations operated
by Korea Meteorological Administration.

SK Planet’s new integrated weather monitoring service is available at Weather Planet’s business
website (
biz.weatherplanet.co.kr) which offers user friendly navigation. Its observation map displays
real-time weather information and specific information of each weather station.

In addition, a climate graph displays climate variables such as rainfall, temperature, and wind
speed, allowing users to use the graphs to compare between places. Cumulative rainfall is also
offered at each of the 10 min, 15 min, 30 min, and 60 min durations. Moreover, Weather Planet
uses animated images to provide information on weather developments such as cloud movement,
course of progressing thunderstorms and Korean Peninsula weather radar. By enhancing the
accuracy of weather observation, Weather Planet is expected to help increase responsiveness to
meteorological disasters caused by extreme weather such as autumn rain spell, severe rainstorm,
and typhoon.

SK Planet plans to offer the service free of charge for two months until October 31. The service will
be available in web-based format to
allow anyone who needs accurate weather information to easily
access the information.

“SK Planet opened up the possibility for a new weather service by completing the installation of weather
observation network with densely spaced stations across the entire Seoul metropolitan area,” said
Choi Gil-seong, SK Planet’s Vice President of Enterprise Business Division. “We expect the integrated
weather monitoring system to contribute to public protection and disaster management by increasing
the responsiveness to meteorological disasters.”

Weather Planet offers a wide range of weather information in the form of open API. Visit Weather
